Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

The renowned psychiatrist Gordon Warme exposes the frailties of modern psychiatry in a new book Brain Evangelists: How Psychiatry Has Convinced Us to Believe in Its Far-Fetched Science and Dubious Treatments. He joins me now, and I’ll get him to tell us about this book, and some of the controversial things therein. For example, in the long history of medicine, biological and chemical ‘abnormalities’ in psychiatric patients have never been identified. And that labels such as schizophrenia and depression are misleading metaphors that dehumanise patients and authorise psychiatrists to remove patients’ civil rights by hospitalising without warrant, and the administration of powerful drugs against a patient’s will. Dr. Warme also holds psychiatrists to account for prescribing drugs. Gordon Warme is a medical doctor specialising in psychiatry. He taught at the University of Toronto for over forty years. His previous books include Reluctant Treasures, The Psychotherapist, The Cure of Folly, and Daggers of the Mind: Psychiatry and the Myth of Mental Disease. This new book is published by UAC Press. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program in Toronto today, Gordon Warme; Dr. Warme, good morning.
