Rena Cohen

The Managing Artistic Director of Realwheels Theatre Rena Cohen discusses their new production of Creeps (01-10 December 2016, at the Historic Theatre at The Cultch), the David E. Freeman play that will feature a mixed ability cast, with Joseph Planta.

Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Realwheels Theatre is presenting a production of David E. Freeman’s play Creeps. Joining me now is Rena Cohen, she is the producer and dramaturge of this production which runs 01-10 December 2016 at the Historic Theatre at The Cultch. I’ll get Ms. Cohen to tell us about this play, one of truth-telling and savage wit. Four disabled men, who work in a so-called ‘sheltered workshop,’ retreat to a washroom where they can escape the way they’re being treated. This production will feature a mixed ability cast, three members of which are from the disability community. And since the play was first staged in 1971, it’ll give audience members a glimpse of the 1970s, derogatory language and all. Rena Cohen is the Managing Artistic Director of Realwheels Theatre. She has worked as a director, teacher and critic, and holds an MFA in Theatre Directing. Visit www.realwheels.ca [1] for tickets and information. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Rena Cohen; Ms. Cohen, good morning.
