I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
We have never seen anything like Jian Ghomeshi. And we haven’t seen as ignominious a downfall as Ghomeshi’s either. His success with the radio program Q, which he hosted for seven years, brought credit and ratings to the CBC. It brought him much renown too. There had been some whispers, some gossip about his personality, even worse some of his actions, but it was in the wake of his 2014 firing that a very dark side emerged, as a number of people came forward alleging sexual assault, workplace harassment, and violence. It was largely through the Toronto Star’s reporting that a fuller picture of Ghomeshi was revealed. Joining me now is Kevin Donovan, who with others, including Canadaland’s Jesse Brown, pursued the allegations made by a number of sources. A new book, Secret Life: The Jian Ghomeshi Investigation, does a great job outlining the Star’s investigation, Donovan’s own personal and professional doubts, as well as chronicling the media frenzy that followed. It is a riveting read. Kevin Donovan is an investigative reporter and editor at the Toronto Star, and his journalism has won him two Michener Awards for public service journalism, three National Newspaper Awards, and three Canadian Association of Journalists Awards.
