Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

In 2017, Canada celebrates the 150th anniversary of our Confederation. Between now and then, we’ll be pondering Canada. A great way to start is the magnificent book by Derek Hayes, Canada: An Illustrated History, Revised and Expanded. Originally published in 2004, this new edition is indeed expanded taking us right to the 2015 federal election, and including over 450 illustrations, some 200-plus photographs, 50-plus paintings and drawings, as well as maps, posters, stamps, cartoons, stained glass, and tapestries. Derek Hayes joins me now, and I’ll get him to tell us about this book, and the Canada he chronicles, beyond the last one hundred and fifty years. The book goes back to the early days of exploration. Derek Hayes is at the award-winning and bestselling author of the Historical Atlas series, which includes the Historical Atlas of Canada, Historical Atlas of Vancouver and the Lower Fraser Valley, Historical Atlas of Toronto, and the Historical Atlas of the United States. He is a geographer by training, with two degrees in geography. He was a planner with Vancouver’s City Planning Department, as well as a real estate consultant. His website is at www.derekhayes.ca [2]. This book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, in White Rock, British Columbia today, Derek Hayes; Mr. Hayes, good morning.
