Jane Clayton and Judy Ginn Walchuk

The playwrights Jane Clayton and Judy Ginn Walchuk discuss their first play, Comfort Cottages, which is being staged by Western Gold Theatre 30 September-23 October 2016 at the PAL Studio Theatre, with Joseph Planta.

Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Western Gold Theatre is going to be staging a production of their first original play, Comfort Cottages. Joining me now are the playwrights Jane Clayton and Judy Ginn Walchuk who tell us about the show, which was presented as a staged reading last year. In the show, four single female friends of retirement age decide to run the motel that one of them has inherited. They’re unsettled emotionally and financially enough that this might be the answer to their problems. The play reflects on life, and I’ll ask Judy and Jane about their characters and the fun and reality they get themselves in. Jane Clayton studied theatre at UBC and Studio 58. She’s worked a variety of jobs, including service, the arts, marketing and branding, as well as the early years of the Vancouver International Film Festival with Leonard Schein and his theatres in town. She’s a consultant with the Sauder School of Business, and a reader of tarot. Judy Ginn Walchuk is also a psychic reader, whose professional career in singing began when she was five years old. She is a member of the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame. She has worked on stage and in night clubs, as well as on television on the CBC with her brother Jim, where they had their own show. She moved to Los Angeles where she performed at the Playboy Club and on the Merv Griffin Show. She had a custom lampshade business in California, before moving back to Vancouver where she did the same. She met Jane when they were both shop owners in town. They’re both observers of the human condition, and I’ll get them to give us some insight as to how that feeds into the show. Comfort Cottages runs from 30 September to 23 October 2016 at the PAL Studio Theatre above PAL, where both Jane and Judy are residents. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, from here in Vancouver, Judy Ginn Walchuk and Jane Clayton; Ms. Clayton, good morning. And Ms. Walchuk, good morning.
