Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Martine J. Reid was married to Bill Reid for nearly half of his creative life. A new book Bill Reid Collected features the largest chronological collection of Reid’s memorable works. The photographs are in full colour, and Dr. Reid’s introductory essay outlines a new system of classifying Reid’s work: Pre-Haida (1948-1951), Haida (1951-1968), and Beyond Haida (1968-1998). You see the life’s work of one of the country’s significant artists from his early Western jewellery training, to his work with Haida traditions, to his expansion beyond the Western and Haida in the latter third of his life. Martine Reid is an author and an independent curator and scholar in Indigenous Northwest Coast art. She’s Honourary Chair of the Bill Reid Foundation, which created the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art located at 639 Hornby Street here in Vancouver. She was director of content and research, and curator at the Bill Reid Gallery from 2008 to 2012. Her previous books include Bill Reid and the Haida Canoe, and Carrying on “Irregardless” Humour in Contemporary Northwest Coast Art. This new book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Martine Reid; Dr. Reid, good morning.
