Sheryda Warrener

The poet and member of the faculty at UBC’s Creative Writing Program, Sheryda Warrener discusses a new summer program for children, Word Wrestlers [1], writing and more, with Joseph Planta.

Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

For a week in July or a week in August, there’s a new sort of children’s camp for kids aged 8 to 12. Word Wrestlers is a five day program that involves excursions and creative writing workshops that provides artistic development and education while school’s out. A member of the UBC Creative Writing Program founded Word Wrestlers, the poet Sheryda Warrener, and with the novelist Ben Stephenson, they run the program. Ms. Warrener joins me now, and I’ll get her to tell us about Word Wrestlers, about what happens and where they go. Sheryda Warrener is an adjunct instructor at UBC teaching poetics. Her work has appeared in Event, The Fiddlehead, Grain, Hazlitt, The Believer, and in the 2013 Best Canadian Poetry in English anthology. She’s been shortlisted for a number of awards. Her collection Floating is Everything was published this past fall by Nightwood Editions. Visit www.wordwrestlers.com to register and for more information. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Sheryda Warrener; Ms. Warrener, good morning.
