The bestselling author of Paris 1919, provost of Trinity College and professor of history at the University of Toronto writes about Richard Nixon’s groundbreaking trip to China, the players involved and the history made. MacMillan is due to become warden of St. Antony’s College at Oxford in 2007.

When Richard Nixon went to China in 1972, it set forth the end of a frosty relationship between the United States and China. The run up to the historic summit, the players and its ramifications are chronicled in an eminently readable new book, already a bestseller, Nixon in China: The Week that Changed the World. Its author is the historian, Margaret MacMillan, who joins me now. It’s a terrific new book that features the individuals who illuminate the amazing time, Richard Nixon, Mao Tse-tung, Chou En-lai, and Henry Kissinger, among others. Margaret MacMillan’s previous books include Women of the Raj, and the blockbuster bestseller, and critical hit, Paris 1919. She is a professor of history at the University of Toronto, and Provost and Vice-Chancellor of Trinity College. In 2007, she will become Warden of St. Antony’s College at Oxford.
