Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Yann Martel’s The High Mountains of Portugal has already been a critical and bestselling book since its release in February. It’s described as a suspenseful story told in three intersecting narratives taking the reader on a journey through Portugal from the early part of the 20th century through to the ‘30s, through to the latter part of the 1900s. The themes of love, loss, belief, and faith are throughout. I’ll get Mr. Martel, who joins me now, to talk about his new book, about the process of writing it, and its reception thus far. His previous books include The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios, Self, Beatrice & Virgil, and 101 Letters to a Prime Minister. His book, Life of Pi was an international bestseller selling more than 13 million copies, a 2002 recipient of the Man Booker Prize among many other prizes, and the basis of an Academy Award winning film. He lives in Saskatoon, but joined me last week, while in Vancouver for an appearance with the Vancouver Writers Fest. The High Mountains of Portugal is published by Knopf. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Yann Martel; Mr. Martel, good morning.
