Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Andrew Nikiforuk joins me again. The award-winning journalist and author has a new book out: Slick Water: Fracking and One Insider’s Stand Against the World’s Most Powerful Industry. In the book we learn of Jessica Ernst, and the struggle she’s had against the government as the oil and gas industry’s fracking in her community affected the drinking water supply. She launched lawsuits against Encana, Alberta Environment, and the Energy Resources Conservation Board. This has made her a hero for a lot of people who are concerned with fracking that’s going on in the world, and where it’s being considered. I’ll get Mr. Nikiforuk to tell us about what fracking is, when this all began for Ms. Ernst, and the implications this all has on government, the oil and energy’s influence on government, and energy and the methods to which we’re extracting it and using it. Andrew Nikiforuk was last on the program a couple of years ago when he published The Energy of Slaves. He has been writing about the oil and gas industry for over two decades. He’s won the Rachel Carson Environmental Book Award. His website is at www.andrewnikiforuk.com [2]. This new book is published by Greystone, in partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation. Please welcome back to the Planta: On the Line program, from Calgary, Alberta, Andrew Nikiforuk; Mr. Nikiforuk, good morning.
