Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

In the new book, That’s Why I’m A Journalist: Top Canadian Reporters Tell Their Most Unforgettable Stories, 44 prominent journalists share the seminal experiences that reflect why they chose their line of work. Mark Bulgutch, who wrote the book, joins me now. The people featured in the book include some of the best reporters in Canada. Among them, Joe Schlesinger, David Halton, Hana Gartner, Anna Maria Tremonti, Brian Stewart, Adrienne Arsenault, Terry Milewski, Nahlah Ayed, Peter Mansbridge, Lisa LaFlamme, Kevin Newman, and many more esteemed men and women who we’ve watched and listened to over the years. Mark Bulgutch was at CBC News for over 35 years, 11 of which were spent as senior editor of The National. He’s won all sorts of awards for his work. When he retired from the CBC in 2009, he was senior executive producer of the network’s news specials, their election night broadcasts federally and provincially (including the 2011 election night broadcast), as well as executive producer of the federal election debates produced by the network consortium from 2005 to 2011. He is an instructor at Ryerson University’s School of Journalism. This book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, in Toronto today, Mark Bulgutch; Mr. Bulgutch, good morning.
