Andrea Warner joins me now. The music journalist and arts writer, who is an associate producer over at CBC Music and a freelance contributor to Exclaim! and the Georgia Straight, has written a wonderful book, We Oughta Know: How Four Women Ruled the ‘90s and Changed Canadian Music. Between 1993 and 1997, Celine Dion, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, and Shania Twain became the some of the bestselling artists in Canadian music. In fact, of the ten bestselling artists in Canada, five are Canadian, four of whom I’ve just mentioned. These mid-1990s year coincided with Ms. Warner’s formative years. She had strident views on these artists, she remains an Alanis fan, and found solace in Sarah McLachlan’s music. On Celine Dion and Shania Twain however, she was a little less of a fan. She explains why, and how she’s re-evaluated these talented women and their impact not on only on music but on her. It’s a compelling book, especially when Andrea works through those awful years when we’re growing up.
