It’s Holocaust Remembrance Week (02-09 November 2014), and an excellent way to mark the week especially with young readers is to pick up the book, The Magician of Auschwitz. It’s a picture book for readers aged seven and up, and tells the story of the Holocaust through the eyes of a boy, Werner Reich, who is bunkmate is an older fellow, who is a magician. The magician, Herr Levin, was famous throughout Berlin before the Second World War. He teaches young Werner some card tricks. I’ll get the book’s author Kathy Kacer, who joins me now, to tell us about the book, and the importance of remembrance this week and throughout the year. Kathy Kacer has written over a dozen books, 18 I believe, on the Holocaust, bringing this dark time in history to younger readers, who ought to know more. Her books have won a number of awards. She’s a former psychologist, and regularly speaks to groups about the importance of keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive. The Magician of Auschwitz is published by Second Story Press.
