I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Timothy Taylor joins me now. He’s just written a charming new book, Foodville: Biting Dispatches from a Food-Obsessed City. It’s a neat book with Mr. Taylor’s observations on food, lovingly recalled, as well as his own experimenting with it, and his travels for it. You also have a view onto the food culture here in Vancouver, something that we’re all participants in, of varying degrees of insufferability, whether we indulge in food porn, or have to go to every new place, because being at a new place is the hip and happening thing to do. There’s a lot of hype around food, and we’re increasingly hyped up about it. I’ll ask Mr. Taylor why, just what a ‘foodie’ is, as well as how this book came about. It’s one of the first books published by Nonvella, which takes works of nonfiction in the area of 5,000 to 20,000 words, and publishes them through a scheme that’s sympathetic to the writer. I’ll ask Mr. Taylor about his experiences with food. He shares a lot of them in this book. Timothy Taylor is a noted author and journalist. He’s an assistant professor in the Department of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia.
