Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

A new book looks at the history of the resistance movement against the Nazis after the 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler. It’s a fascinating book: Disobeying Hitler: German Resistance After Operation Valkyrie. Its author, Randall Hansen joins me now. I’ll ask him about this time after July 1944, what the state of Hitler’s grasp on Germany and the conduct of the war is, and who made up the resistance against the Nazis, and how their brave actions prevented so much more destruction and death. Randall Hansen is a professor of politics and the holder of a research chair at the University of Toronto. He’s a frequent commentator on current affairs and history in sundry media outlets, print and broadcast. He received his master’s degree and doctorate from Oxford, where he was a Commonwealth scholar. [His undergraduate degree was from the University of British Columbia.] He’s written four previous books, including Fire and Fury, which was a Governor General’s Award finalist. That book told the story of Allied bombing in Germany during the Second World War. Visit www.randallhansen.ca for more information. This book is published by Doubleday. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Randall Hansen; Professor Hansen, good morning.
