Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

It is timely that I speak to Elaine Lui now, days before Mother’s Day, as her book Listen to the Squawking Chicken: When Mother Knows Best, What’s a Daughter to Do?, has been getting great notices and is selling equally quite well. It’s a charming book, that’s also tough and harsh, which could be words to describe the book’s subject, Elaine’s mom. For a mother, Elaine and the people around her endured a fortune-telling, shameless woman, who is unorthodox, even outright nasty, but who got the job done as a wife and a mom, and who provides this book marvellous lessons that we can all learn from. Well, not all, but certainly they’re always entertaining, not to mention touching, moving, and heartbreaking. Elaine Lui is a celebrity gossip blogger, whose website LaineyGossip [2] has become a hugely popular source of entertainment news. She’s a reporter of CTV’s Etalk, doing that since 2006, and is a co-hose of The Social, which you can also see on CTV. Some say she’s the best part on that show. She worked for Covenant House here in Vancouver, but moved back recently to Toronto, where she was born. We forget because we see her on television all the time, just how good a writer she is. This book is hard to put down. It’s enjoyable, even when it makes you cringe. It’ll break your heart in some parts, and in others, lift your spirits. Get it. It’s published by Random House. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Elaine Lui; Ms. Lui, good morning.
