Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Our friends at the Vancouver International Film Festival’s Vancity Theatre are celebrating International Dance Day this Tuesday (29 April 2014), with a special presentation: Dancing in the Dark: Michael van den Bos on the Movies’ Greatest Dance Numbers. It’s a nearly two hours of a movie medley curated and presented by Michael van den Bos, who joins me now to preview what’ll be seen. The dance numbers that’ll be shown include clips starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Eleanor Powell, Shirley Temple, John Travolta, Gwen Verdon, Dick Van Dyke, Laurel & Hardy, Christopher Walken, and so many more. The movies the clips are taken from include Singin’ in the Rain, Gold Diggers of 1935, The Band Wagon, Moulin Rouge, Damn Yankees, West Side Story, All that Jazz, Top Hat, and more. There’ll even be some Bollywood showcased. The presentation is at 3.00pm on Tuesday, and is free. Visit www.viff.org [1] for information. Michael van den Bos is a film scholar and critic, his own website, Movie Mad is at www.michaelvdb.shawwebspace.ca [2]. He was on recently to talk about the series of Woody Allen films he showcased, and I enjoyed the chat very much that he’s back to talk about movies again, and more. Please welcome back to the Planta: On the Line program, Michael van den Bos; Mr. van den Bos, good morning.
