Y2K, the end of the world? - THE COMMENTARY

By Michael Kwan, Guest Commentator

People have talked about this idea for some time now, here and there, but recently it has really begun to pick up much exposure. Why? Well, this event is supposed to "go down" very soon . . . say, the first of January 2000.

If someone were to go through the trouble and actually search for material on this, you wouldn't really have any problem at all. Stuff on this subject comes from every corner of the globe. In the Holy Bible, there are references to the end of the world. Both Jewish and Christian peoples believe in it, in some way, shape, or form. Sticking with Europe, we have the prophecies of the famed sixteenth-century seer in Nostradamus. Many people have interpreted many of his predictions as true, from the French Revolution to Nazi Germany. Many of his prophetic quatrains, all written in French, pertain to the Armageddon, to the end of the world. Here is an example, translated into

English:

In the year 1999 and seven months,

From the skies shall come an alarmingly powerful king,

To raise again the great King of the Jacquerie,

Before and after, Mars shall reign at will.

Now, I'm sure that most of you read that with a puzzled look on your face. I am also sure that most of you know that Mars is the god of war. Well, July 1999 has come and gone, and I do not see the world destroyed just yet. However, this prediction does not explicitly say that the end of the world is in July 1999, but it does relate to the Armageddon. That's just an example.

Getting back to Jews and Christians, I happened to catch a story on Dateline NBC a couple weeks back about the Armageddon. They talked about the thousands, and thousands of people flocking to Israel on one-way tickets, because God told them to do so. These people say that at the end of this century, the world will plummet to the fiery depths of Hell, and Jesus will descend to Earth to take the people of Israel to Heaven to join God. However, there are a few stipulations to that. According to these people, three things have to happen. One of them is that there has been chaos and disaster before it happens. They say that Hurricane Mitz, the Gulf War, and all these other things fulfill that. I can't remember the second, off hand. But the third, is that there is to be a Jewish temple built on a specific spot. That spot is currently filled by a Muslim mosque.

The way I see it, these Jews and Christians will get so fed up, and riled up, that they will go and destroy this mosque, thus starting a true world war. A war of the world's largest religions. If that should happen, the earth could very well "plummet to the depths of hell" so to speak. Unfortunately, we can do little about it, so I say we just sit down and enjoy our time here while we still can. Should the Armageddon come in our lifetimes, well, let's all die in a blaze of glory. Now, isn't that a scary thought?
