A Look at... What’s Going on in the World of Entertainment - THE COMMENTARY
By Joseph Planta
Ally Walker has left the NBC series Profiler to focus on a film career. Doesn’t anyone remember David Caruso and Shelley Long? She’s to be replaced by former Melrose Place vixen Jamie Luner.
Ming Na-Wen, who started her rise to prominence on ER, only to move on to The Single Guy, returns to ER this fall. She replaces Gloria Ruben, who’s decided to focus on film and singing.
ER is also trying to lure Oscar winner Sidney Poitier and Donald Sutherland to join its cast. Looks like after George left, they need more male characters, but come on old guys? If ER could get either of these formidable actors they’d be doing things right.
Carrie Fisher is currently writing a film for her mother Debbie Reynolds, Those Old Broads. Set to star are Reynolds, Lauren Bacall, Shirley MacLaine, and Elizabeth Taylor. Good cast.
Hallie Berry and Rebecca Romijin-Stamos have joined the cast of the upcoming X-Men movie for Fox.
Oscar winner, Tony winner and Emmy winner Liza Minnelli, after hip replacements and nearly losing her voice, is set to hit Broadway in the Spring of 2000. She’ll be doing a tribute to her father Vincentte Minnelli and it may be just a lecture series, but Fred Ebb’s on board so Life may just be another Cabaret old chum.
Jerry Springer has signed on with Great Britain’s ITV to do a sort of Tonight Show for the Brits. He promises no violence; the weekly series won’t debut till mid-200 and by then I think his Chicago based show will be toast by then.
Who knew wrestling would make the newspapers? In both the New York Daily News and The National Post, they report Jesse Ventura will once again step into the ring for a WWF pay-per-view. Probably a last stop into Sports Entertainment before heading for a run to the White House?, I hope so.
Jack Nicholson was injured over the weekend in a car accident, looks like it was his fault. But showed up Tuesday night for the World Premiere of Cruise, Kidman and Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.
Kevin Costner is set to play Robert Kennedy in a picture that’s about to be shot, 13 Days.
Entertainer Rosie Perez, who shot to fame as a Fly Girl on the Fox series In Living Color, married filmmaker and playwright Seth Zvi Rosenfeld Friday in Brooklyn. Guests included actors Marisa Tomei, Debi Mazar, John Leguizamo and Wesley Snipes. Rosenfeld recently directed Perez in the upcoming flick King of the Jungle. (this courtesy of TV Guide.) That’s what’s happening in the world of entertainment for July 14th.
